There’s something quietly luxurious about a slow brunch in the heart of Dempsey Hill. Birdsong in the air, dappled morning light—and a table set with sourdoughs that tell a story 37 years in the making.

We were recently invited to an exclusive media tasting of Baker & Cook’s new brunch menu, and it’s safe to say: this is no ordinary café experience. With every dish built around Little Johnny—their treasured sourdough starter from 1987—the new offerings feel both grounded in tradition and elevated in flavour.

A Brunch Menu Rooted in Craft
What sets this menu apart is not just the sourdough, but the reverence for it. The team at Baker & Cook has thoughtfully curated each dish to showcase a particular variety—from the hearty German Volkorn to the tangy Pain au Levain—allowing the breads to take centre stage.

What We Tasted:
1. B&C Signature Sourdough Bread Board
An elegant presentation of four sourdoughs paired with housemade dips and butters. The Danish Rugbrød was especially memorable, its dense grain playing beautifully against a delicate strawberry jam and eggplant dip.
2. Sourdough Dutch Baby Pancake (Dempsey Exclusive)
Golden, airy, and served with banana compote, mascarpone, berries, and pecans. Equal parts dessert and dream.
3. Chia Seed Bowl
A light, refreshing balance of oat milk, coconut milk, passionfruit, almond and berries. A plant-based pleasure, layered with texture.
4. Sourdough Tagliolini Puttanesca with Seafood
A standout dish. The sourdough pasta delivers a delicate chew, while mussels, prawns and anchovies enrich the sauce with briny complexity.
5. Banana Man Smoothie
Tropical sweetness in a glass. Banana, mango, honey, and vanilla yoghurt—sunny, smooth, and satisfying.
6. Very Berry Smoothie
Raspberry, blueberry, kiwi and oat—blended to velvet. A sophisticated take on the classic berry smoothie.

The Setting
Baker & Cook Dempsey doesn’t try too hard—and that’s its charm. It’s warm, leafy, and unpretentious, yet the food is anything but simple. For those who appreciate quiet luxury, well-made bread, and a morning unhurried, this is a table worth reserving.
